TrønderEnergi had doubled its renewable energy production from 2019 until 2022, from 1.9 TWh(Terawatt-hours) to almost 4 TWh. Together with their new ambitions, TrønderEnergi wanted to multiply that growth rate in the next ten years. But plans were halted by legacy IT systems. The IT platform suffered from a lack of development over time. Scaling was difficult, horizontally and vertically. Change and innovation were at a low pace. TrønderEnergi needed a comprehensive modernization and faced a significant transformation. The company needed a future-proof technology platform that could substantiate the aspirations.
By transforming today's legacy systems and applications to a cloud platform, TrønderEnergi would get a future-proof technology platform. TrønderEnergi choosed Microsoft Azure and moved on application by application to the Microsoft cloud. Some of the applications were moved as a lift and shift project, securing that the applications take full advantage of the cloud possibilities. But many applications have just been moved directly into the cloud, leaving an excellent opportunity to streamline, consolidate, and customize the applications later.
TrønderEnergi ended up using Microsoft’s Norwegian data centers for their cloud platform due to legal matters, latency, and, last but not least, the extra safety and security of having data and solutions within the country's borders.

Since the project started in the middle of the pandemic, with participants being at the home office, Microsoft Teams have been the mainstay of the platform for communication and collaboration.
